COMMUNITY SERVICE

Consistent with the Jesuit professional tradition of the College of Business Administration, the college has made a commitment to provide opportunities for students to get involved in service projects in the business community.

One opportunity the college provides is a program in which students may earn credit toward their degree while at the same time making a professional contribution to a non-profit organization. Reverend Thomas Brennan, S.J., our college chaplain teaches the class (BUEX 189 - Business and the Non-Profit Sector).

In the past, students have worked on the following projects:

  •  Setting up computer systems for Shelters for the Homeless
  • Designing billboards for Help the Homeless Organizations
  • Assisting parolees in seeking jobs
  • Writing grant proposals, developing marketing brochures and developing a web site for the Children’s Theatre School
  • Conducting a marketing surveying and analyzing the data of membership information for Nature Centers
  • Designing a Promotional Video for Alternatives School
  • Designing Marketing Surveys for supermarkets in poor neighborhoods
  • Aiding churches to market their non-religious, and non-sacramental services
  • Marketing local neighborhood organizations and alliances
Some of the groups in the city that have participated in the past include:
  • The Open Gate
  • Midtown Neighborhood Association
  • Parents’ Anonymous
  • Sojourner Truth House
  • Children’s Theatre School
  • Milwaukee Career Cooperative
  • L.A.N.D. Corporation
  • American Youth Hostels
  • Nova Academy
  • Salvation Army
  • Marquette High School and the Merrill Park Neighborhood
  • Sherman Park Neighborhood Association
  • Wells Street Merchants’ Association
  • Riveredge Nature Center
  • Hunger Task Force
  • Irish Cultural Society
If any non-profit organization would like to participate, call Fr. Brennan @ 288-1465.

The benefits to our students are many:

  • Application of business skills in an organized and mentored environment; business faculty are available for consultation.
  • Personal responsibility for the overall planning and integration of a business plan.
  • Developing team and organization skills while interacting in a business setting.
  • Providing community service to help improve the community and assisting those in need.
  • Learning flexibility by scheduling project time.
In addition to the above course, the College of Business Administration is involved in other community service projects:
  • Each professional business student organization has a service requirement component
  • Christmas Teddy Bear Tree for homeless shelter and for the school of Developmentally Disabled Children
  • Involved in the university’s  National Hunger Clean-up program
