MSAE Admissions Requirements

The successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) is necessary for admission in the MSAE program. For those below the above level, please contact us to see if other qualifications may be used to help fulfill this requirement.
Qualified applicants are expected to have completed coursework in economics through intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and at least one course in both basic statistics and calculus at the college level.

Applicants without the required background will be considered deficient and will be required to make up the deficiency either through remedial coursework or an approved program of self-study.

Although it is strongly recommended that students begin the program in the fall semester, applicants for the spring semester will be considered.

Applicants should forward all of the following directly to the Marquette University Graduate School of Management:

  • Graduate School Application Form and $40 fee
  • Official Transcripts for all Colleges attended, except Marquette
  • Resume or job profile
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Official Scores from either the GRE or GMAT general examinations
  • Official Scores from the TOEFL Examination (for International students)

Application forms and copies of the Graduate Bulletin may be obtained online and also at the following address:

Program Requirements

The program requires:

  • a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate work
  • a non-credit master's essay
  • a final oral examination
  • no formal master's thesis is required

The 30 hours include 12 hours of required core courses in economic theory and quantitative analysis, an additional 12 hours of coursework relating to a chosen area of specialization, and 6 hours of electives. For students who do not choose a specialization, a general track is also available.

The master's essay consists of a careful application of the student's newly acquired analytical skills to a particular issue or problem. It is completed during the final semester of the program and is often an extension of a previously completed course project.

The final oral exam is a roughly one-hour opportunity for students to demonstrate their oral communication skills by discussing economic issues and events mainly related to their essay, in both technical and non-technical language.
