
Master
of Science in Human Resources
Marquette's Master
of Science in Human Resource (MSHR) program is designed
to meet the educational need of those individuals who are
pursuing or are interested in a career in human resources.
This program permits one to develop skills and knowledge
in such areas as compensation and reward systems, employment
and labor law, labor relations, training and development,
staffing, benefit administration, human resources information
systems, and human resource strategy.
The College of
Business Administration's Human Resources Advisory Board,
as well as the Executive Committee of the Human Resources
Management Association of Southeast Wisconsin (HRMA), provided
extensive assistance in the design of this degree program.
As a result, the program of study focuses on the career
needs of today's human resources professional.
Students from
any undergraduate field of study can be accommodated within
Marquette's MSHR program and are encouraged to apply.
The Program requires
a minimum of 36 semester hours of credit. The required number
of credits can be as many as 38 hours if a student has not
completed a microeconomics course during undergraduate studies.
For full-time
students who do not have any human resources work experience,
a part-time or summer job in human resources is strongly
recommended. The College of Business Administration can
often assist students in locating suitable jobs or internships.
Applicants seeking
admission to the MSHR program should follow the procedures
and guidelines described in the Marquette University Graduate
School Bulletin.
Admission decisions
are based on a variety of criteria, each of which is intended
to measure the applicant's ability to succeed in the program.
No application can be evaluated until all of the required
official documents have been received.
An applicant must
have completed or be in the process of completing a baccalaureate
degree from an accredited college or university. In addition,
the applicant must submit the following items to the Marquette
Graduate School of Management, Straz Hall Executive Center:
- A completed Graduate School application and application
fee
- Official transcripts from previously and currently attended
colleges and universities (other than Marquette)
- Official test scores of the Graduate Management Admission
Test (GMAT) or the GRE (Graduate Record Exam)
- Essay questions on page 2 of the application form
- Resume or job profile
International
applicants whose native language is not English, and who
have not received a degree from an accredited academic institution
in the United States, also must submit official TOEFL (Test
of English as a Foreign Language) scores. In addition, international
applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation.

Foundation
Course Work (0-2 credit hours)
Students who have
not completed a micro-economics course are required to complete ECON 6000 Economics - Foundation (2 sem. hrs.). This course
is in addition to the required 36 hours for the M.S.H.R.
degree.

Students will complete both of the following courses for
6 credit hours total:
- HURE 6500 - Statistical Methods and Research Design
(3 cr.)
- HURE 6590 - Human Resource Strategy and Planning

Students will
complete 3 or 4 of the following human resources courses
(9 or 12 credit hours):
- HURE 6530 - Staffing Work Organizations (3 cr.)
- HURE 6580 - Training and Development (3 cr.)
- HURE 6510 - Employee Compensation (3 cr.)
- HURE 5020 - Labor Relations (3 cr.)
Staffing, training,
compensation and labor relations are the central functions
performed by human resource professional. Our students are
required to take at least one course in three of the four
areas. If a student elects to take all four of the above
courses, the supporting field course work is reduced from
9 hours to 6 hours.

Supporting
Fields Course Work (6-9 hours)
In addition to foundation and core course work, students
in the M.S.H.R. program must take six or nine credits (two
or three courses) selected from a wide variety of supporting
areas both within and outside of the College of Business
Administration. Supporting areas of study include:
communication, counseling, instructional leadership, economics,
law, research methodology, and business administration.
Students may choose any combination of courses in these
areas from the list of designated classes (available from
the Graduate Business Programs Office in the College of
Business Administration).

The MSHR program
is designed to meet the educational and logistical needs
of working adults who have a bachelor's degree and wish
to earn a graduate degree in human resources on a part-time
basis. Classes are available year round. During the fall
and spring semesters, almost all classes meet once per week
in the early evening, typically from 5:45 p.m. to 8:25 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday. Some classes meet on Saturday morning.
During summer session, most classes meet two evenings per
week.
Full-Time &
Part-Time Students
Full-time students are encouraged to apply and can complete
the program in one to two years, depending on their backgrounds.
Completion time for part-time students will vary with their
schedules, but completion normally can be accomplished in
three to five years.
Marquette University
offers scholarship opportunities for graduate students through
the Graduate School. A limited number of assistantships
also may be available to students pursuing the MSHR degree.
Loans, part-time job opportunities, and other forms of financial
aid are available through the Office of Student Financial
Aid. However, no offer of financial aid can be made until
a student has been admitted to Marquette on a regular, degree-seeking
basis.

Applications are
evaluated as soon as the candidate's admission file is complete.
Applicants are informed of the Admission Committee's decision
shortly thereafter. Those admitted to the program may begin
their studies at the start of any semester during the year.

Applicants are
encouraged to apply well in advance of their intended matriculation.
Applications received less than 6 weeks before the start
of a semester might not be reviewed in time for enrollment
that semester.

The importance of the human resources function is increasing.
The Occupational Outlook Quarterly reports the jobs
in human resources management are expected to have above
average job opportunities during the coming decade.
The Human Resource
Management Organization (HRMO) is a student organization
at Marquette University which is associated with the Society
for Human Resource Management and is sponsored by HRMA.
This organization
provides ample opportunities for students to attend presentations
by and interact with human resource professionals.
